This issue was adressed in a recent letter to the editor, which was printed in both the Salinas Californian and The Herald:
"Now is a good time to switch sewer companies for the 1,100 customers along the Hwy 68 corridor served by the Adcock family-owned California Utility Service (CUS). On Aug 12 the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) gave CUS an outrageous 88.4% rate increase from $62 per month to $115 for residences. CUS will charge a temporary rate of $147 per month for 18 months to play catch up from the date CUS filed for the increase last October.
CUS customers living along Hwy 68 from River Road to Corral de Tierra should look at joining the Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency (MRWPCA) that has a $12 monthly fee. This change will be expensive and take the collective political will of Adcock’s 1,100 customers to rid themselves of this onerous burden. They would have to pay off a bond to switch over. MRWPCA serves all of Salinas, Fort Ord, Castroville most of the Peninsula Cities, and part of the unincorporated area of northern Monterey County. Sixty percent of the wastewater is recycled, providing irrigation water to 12,000 acres of Castroville farmland. See their website at mrwpca.org . This green regional wastewater public utility is a good alternative for Hwy 68 residents."
